Transforming an Overbuilt Backyard
Into a Thoughtful, Usable Space
The Lindsey family moved to Arizona from the Pacific Northwest and wanted to rework a backyard shaped by a steep slope and an irregular layout. Nearly 18 inches of grade difference created by previous owners made the space hard to enjoy, and they needed a design approach that would reset the elevation and create room for something new. Rising Tide earned the project by proposing an out-of-the-box solution that corrected the grading issue and made the backyard usable again.
The redesign included a water feature, grilling station, floating island, and a raised fire feature area positioned for evening use. A putting green and turf zone added daily enjoyment, while new plantings, low-voltage lighting, upgraded irrigation, and proper drainage tied everything together. The front yard received attention as well, including a faux river feature and fresh gravel topdressing, giving the home a cohesive look from front to back.
Despite the technical challenges—especially the precise cuts required around the existing pool—the crew delivered consistent communication and clean workmanship throughout the build. The project finished with a five-star review and earned a Hardscape Hero award from Belgard. As Rising Tide’s first job, it provided early confirmation that the team was ready to raise the industry standard through preparation, craftsmanship, and follow-through.
